Vienna around 1900: the age of the Ringstrasse, the rise of the bourgeoisie and a flourishing art and cultural scene.
However, away from the tourist trail, there were also those who were not wanted at the top: tramps, beggars and vagrants. These people populated the poorhouses, warming stations and men's hostels, and even the sewers. The social challenges of the growing world city were enormous. In his 1908 book
“Through the Viennese Quarters of Misery and Crime”, journalist Emil Kläger draws attention to these conditions. On this tour, we follow in his footsteps and explore the dark side of Vienna around 1900. The walk takes us from the second district to the city center.
